Marian Turski
Marian Turski (born June 26, 1926 as Mosze Turbowicz in Druskininkai ) is a Polish journalist of Jewish descent and chairman of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw .
Life
From 1942 he was imprisoned in the Litzmannstadt ghetto . In August 1944 he was deported to Auschwitz . In the spring of 1945 he came on a death march to Loslau, from where he went to the Buchenwald concentration camp , then to the Theresienstadt ghetto .
After the Second World War he settled in Warsaw . From 1945 he worked in the youth organization of the Polish Workers 'Party and later in the press department of the Polish United Workers' Party . From 1958 he was head of the historical editorial team of the news magazine " Polityka ". Despite his old age, he continues to work as a journalist.
He is currently chairman of the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw , member of the main board of the Association of Jewish Combatants and Victims of World War II, member of the International Auschwitz Council and the Council of the House of the Wannsee Conference . Since March 26, 2009 he has been the chairman of the Council of the Warsaw Museum of the History of Polish Jews .
On January 27, 2015, he took part in a special session of the Bundestag on the day of remembrance of the victims of National Socialism (70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz).
On February 16, 2015 he was awarded the Gloria Artis Medal for Cultural Merit in Gold.
Turski was friends with Władysław Bartoszewski and gave a speech at his funeral on May 4, 2015.
On his 90th birthday on June 26, 2016, Turski, who was still professionally active, received congratulations from Angela Merkel , Joachim Gauck , Barack Obama and Shimon Peres .
On January 27, 2020 he gave an important speech on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp : "The eleventh commandment is: Do not be indifferent ".
