Mariatorget is an underground station on the Stockholm Metro and is close to Mariatorget , but not directly below it. It is located in the Södermalm district . The station is served by the Röda linjen of the Stockholm metro system . At a distance of approx. 400 meters is Stockholms södra south station, which does not have its own subway station, so Mariatorget serves as a transfer point across the Timmermansgarten street.
The central location in the city center makes the station one of the most frequented stations on the underground network. On a normal working day, 18,000 commuters get on here.
The station was put into operation on April 5, 1964, when the first section of the Röda linjen between T-Centralen and Fruängen or Örnsberg was inaugurated. The station was built using the cut-and-cover method, the platforms are approx. 20 meters underground. The station is located between the Zinkensdamm and Slussen stations . It is around two kilometers to Stockholm Central Station .
Trivia
- In the underground station there is a small sculpture called "Människa och pelare" by Asmund Arle, which has already been stolen at least eight times.
- On March 18, 2008, dynamite was discovered in the tunnel between Mariatorget and Slussen . This was forgotten after the completion of the construction of the Röda linjen. All traffic on the Röda linjen had to be stopped in the morning rush hour until the police removed the old dynamite sticks.
