Marie-Célie Agnant

Marie-Célie Agnant (* 1953 ) is one of Haiti coming francophone Canadian writer and oral storyteller .

Life and work

Marie-Célie Agnant was born in Port-au-Prince , Haiti in 1953 . She worked as an interpreter and translator for several years . In 1970 she emigrated to Canada for political reasons . There she worked as a French teacher before starting to write.

Agnant writes poetry, novels and children's books that have been translated into English, Dutch, Italian, Korean and Spanish. Her texts revolve around the subject area: exile , exclusion , bicultural identities, hybridity , alienation and migrant memory. Her novella Le Silence comme le sang (1997) was shortlisted for the Governor General's Award for Fiction , while La légende du poisson amoureux was awarded the Prix Gros Sel Grands Enfants in Belgium in 2007 .
Agnant also works with the Bread and Puppet Theater ( Vermont ).
