Marie Cardinal

Marie Cardinal , with full name Simone Odette Marie Thérese Cardinal (born March 3, 1928 or 1929 in Algiers , then France ; † May 9, 2001 in Valréas , Vaucluse department , France), was a French writer, journalist, screenwriter and actress.

Life

Cardinal was born into a wealthy French pied noir family that had lived in the settlement colony of Algeria since 1836 . The parents divorced shortly after she was born, and she was taken into the care of her mother. After graduating from Catholic schools, she went to study philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris . Her thesis dealt with Philo of Alexandria .

In 1953 Cardinal married the French director and theater comedian Jean-Pierre Ronfard . The couple went abroad until 1960, where Cardinal worked as a philosophy teacher at the French schools in Thessaloniki , Lisbon , Vienna and Montréal in Canada . The couple's three children were born in Algiers and Lisbon.

1967 Cardinal worked on the film Two or Three Things I Know About Her by Jean-Luc Godard with and took a role in the film Mouchette of Bresson . In 1969 she moved with the children to Paris while her husband stayed in Canada. In order to earn a living, she subsequently worked as a journalist with articles for L'Express and Elle, among others .

Since her first novel, published in 1962, Cardinal has written other works that, however, did not meet the tastes of the intellectuals of the time. However, they were widely accepted and widely read by the general public.
