Marie Elisabeth von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel (born January 7, 1638 in Braunschweig ; † February 15, 1687 in Coburg ) was the daughter of Duke August the Younger and, through marriage, Duchess of Saxony-Eisenach and then of Saxony-Coburg .

Life

The second child of August the Younger from Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel and his third wife Sophie Elisabeth von Mecklenburg grew up in a highly literary court where Justus Georg Schottelius and Sigmund von Birken worked as teachers. All children were active in writing, following the example of their learned parents, although Marie's half-siblings Anton Ulrich and Sibylle Ursula put them in the shade. Her mother encouraged her own and her stepchildren from around 1648 through glamorous family appearances in front of a select audience in the Wolfenbüttel court theater and placed particular emphasis on the ethical and moral duties of the education of princes.

Marie Elisabeth married Adolf Wilhelm von Eisenach (1632–1668) in 1663 at the age of 25 . She had five children with him, four of whom died early shortly after birth. A fifth, born after his death on November 21, 1668, was only three years old; the successor of her first husband fell to his brothers. On July 18, 1676, she married Albrecht von Sachsen-Coburg (1648–1699) in Gotha , with whom she first settled in Saalfeld until the couple moved to Coburg in 1680. His only son with her died in infancy.

She had considerable influence on her second husband, who, like her, was musically educated. In addition to her early literary work, her achievements in her time in Coburg included the promotion of the court theater , which opened there in 1684, and the creation of a lively theater culture based on the model of the parental court in Wolfenbüttel.
