Marie von Olfers (pseudonym M (aria) Werner, Werner Maria ; born October 27, 1826 in Berlin ; † January 8, 1924 there ) was a German writer , illustrator and salonnière .

Life

Marie von Olfers was the second daughter of the General Director of the Royal Museums Ignaz von Olfers and the writer Hedwig, née von Staegemann . She became interested in music, painting and poetry from an early age. Her parents' house, which was the meeting point of the intelligentsia in Berlin, promoted these interests. Her childhood friends included the daughters Bettina von Arnims , Gisela , Armgart and Maximiliane , who founded the exclusively female coffee group in Berlin in 1843 . In this literary salon, where the daughters of the Berlin bourgeoisie and the aristocracy regularly met, Marie von Olfers wrote his first smaller works, which appeared in the salon's own coffee newspaper.

From 1860 she published poems, children's books and novellas, mostly under the pseudonym Maria Werner, which she illustrated herself. After the death of her mother, with whom she had lived, she continued her salon tradition. Ernst von Wildenbruch , Hugo von Hofmannsthal , Rainer Maria Rilke and Richard Voss were among their guests and admirers, along with many other artists, scholars and members of the military and court society. For some time she was a board member of the Association of Berlin Artists . On the occasion of her 80th birthday, a Marie von Olfers Foundation was set up to promote children's books in 1906.

Mentally active into old age, Marie von Olfers died in an accident in her apartment on Schöneberger Ufer in Berlin-Tiergarten in early 1924 . She had tried to put a burning coal that had fallen back into the fireplace. Her clothes caught fire and she died before anyone could come to her aid. She was buried in the grave of her grandparents Friedrich August and Elisabeth von Staegemann in Cemetery III of the Jerusalem and New Church in Berlin-Kreuzberg . The grave is preserved. Her small, heavily weathered tombstone bears the inscription, "Blessed are the pure of heart, for they will see God" (Mt 5: 8).

A niece, Margarete von Olfers, published her diaries and letters in two volumes from 1928 onwards. Marie von Olfers had great artistic influence on another niece, Sibylle von Olfers .
