The Marienborn – Beendorf railway was a branch line in Saxony-Anhalt that was originally built and operated by the Marienborn-Beendorfer Kleinbahn . It led from Marienborn to Beendorf .

history

It was opened on September 17, 1899.

Share of more than 1,000 marks in the Marienborn-Beendorfer Kleinbahn-Gesellschaft from October 21, 1922

The line began at Marienborn station on the main Magdeburg – Braunschweig line and led in a north-westerly direction to Beendorf am Lappwald . The Burbach trade union , the main shareholder, wanted to open up its potash mining there in terms of traffic. The United Railway Construction and Operating Company initially took over the construction and operation of the railway . From January 1, 1921, the operation was run by the Burbach trade union and from January 1, 1936, the Marienborn-Beendorfer Kleinbahn-Gesellschaft AG itself. After the end of World War II, the Kleinbahn became the Sächsische Provinzbahnen GmbH and on April 1, 1949 the Deutsche Reichsbahn assumed. From March 12, 1949 to autumn 1949, it was the only railway in the SBZ that was not officially publicly owned .

The freight transport met the expectations of the founders. In addition to the extensive transports of potash and rock salt, the connection to the sugar factory in Alleringersleben also helped . In contrast, passenger traffic was very low. The maximum was four pairs of trains in 1914. In 1922, an application was made to stop passenger traffic. For the time being, however, only weekend trips were canceled from 1923. In the 1930s and 1940s, they were limited to a weekday train. From 1935 onwards, freight traffic increased due to the installation of an ammunition factory in a disused potash mine. Until the end of the war, ammunition was manufactured and stored here, in some cases by concentration camp inmates.

In the GDR, it was primarily the situation in the border area that prevented traffic from growing, so that the last passenger train left on September 29, 1962. Freight traffic continued until the Bartensleben mine was closed in 1969. The last freight train ran on January 29, 1970. Shortly afterwards, the dismantling of the line began. The official shutdown date was July 31, 1970.
