Mariengrotte (Wollmetshofen)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

There are two Mariengrottos in Wollmetshofen ( Bavaria ) . The larger and younger St. Mary's Grotto , named Maria, Mother of the Great Victory, is a cave-shaped shrine in which a large image of Mary is placed. The smaller and older grotto is typically called the small grotto in Wollmetshof village jargon. It also houses a portrait of the Virgin Mary.

location

From the center of Wollmetshofen, the Grotteweg leads about 500 meters north to the Mariengrotte, which is located on the edge of the forest. There is a public car park about 100 meters away for visitors to the Mariengrotte, which is also used by hikers. ( )

The grotto is a place of pilgrimage because it is located on the Bavarian-Swabian Way of St. James .

history

In 1965, a Marian prayer association in Wollmetshofen decided to build another, larger Marian grotto to commemorate the Battle of the White Mountain . The architecture firm Ruf drew up a plan for this, which was finally approved on March 4, 1966 by the Augsburg district office . After a construction period of just under 2 months, the grotto was consecrated on April 30, 1967 by the Episcopal clergy, Pastor Alfons Mack († May 5, 2011, at the age of 96). " Mother of the Great Victory " is an invocation of Our Lady and often refers, as here, to the battle of the White Mountain.

In 1972 an adjoining plot of land was purchased to create more space and seating for visitors to the grotto.

The Mariengrotto is regularly used for processions by the local community and by pilgrims .

Crossroads between the small grotto and the Mariengrotto

The small grotto and St. Mary's grotto are about 600 meters away on foot. Between the small grotto and the Mariengrotto, at the Forsthausstraße / Grotteweg junction, there is another cross , which is framed with an imposing hedge. ( )
