Marienkapelle in Sehndorf

The Marienkapelle or Chapel of the Assumption of Mary is a Roman Catholic branch church in the district of Sehndorf of the Saarland community of Perl . It is a listed monument as a single monument.

history

The Marienkapelle was built in 1843 by the entrepreneur Johann Peter Mersch and his wife Anna as a thank you for fortunate financial and family relationships . In the same year the couple donated the chapel and property to the Catholic residents of Sehndorf, on condition that they cover all future costs and maintain the church. The small church was restored for the first time in 1893. The roof and tower were newly covered. In 1906 the church received a new high altar . In 1943 the building was repainted and received six new windows. Further restorations and renovations followed in 1945, 1949 and 1952. From 1966 to 1971 the church was significantly redesigned. The roof had to be completely renewed, the tower was demolished and rebuilt. The central aisle of the church hall was tiled and the sloping ceilings were covered with planed Oregon boards. Exterior and interior plaster had to be restored. The sacristy was expanded and the peace oak planted in front of the chapel had to be felled in 1871, as its roots endangered the foundation of the chapel. In 2003/04 the chapel was restored again.

architecture

The white-painted plastered building with a gable roof is accessed via a portal in the arch of which the construction date 1843 can be seen. The long sides each have three window axes with round arches. The slate tower has an overhanging pyramid roof.

Furnishing

High altar

The neo-Gothic high altar made of shell limestone on a two-tier wooden pedestal in front of the front wall was the masterpiece of master stone mason Johann Wagner, who was born in Sehndorf. The two-tiered altarpiece of the high altar is 2.80 m high. This is followed by a 1 m high sacrament house with a triangular gable, in between a small tympanum with Christ's monogram and a 1.10 m high aedicule , on the base of which stands a Madonna and Child. She wears a crown, in her left hand the apple of the cross as a sign of authority, on her right arm the baby Jesus, who raises his right hand in blessing.

Sacred art

The interior of the church includes a carved wood Madonna with baby Jesus from 1994 in the high altar, as well as a St. Catherine with a book on a console, a Mary with child on a console, a Saint Joseph with baby Jesus on a console to the left of the high altar and a Sacred Heart figure on a console to the right of the high altar. 14 framed pictures of the Stations of the Cross hang on the entrance wall and on the side walls.

window

The six lead-glazed arched windows date from 1943 and show St. Anna , Maria , St. Agnes , St. Antonius , St. Wendelin and St. Aloisius .

Bell jar

The bronze bell was cast in 1974 in the former Mabilon bell foundry in Saarburg .
