Marija Vladimirovna Sakharova ( Russian Мария Владимировна Захарова ; born December 24, 1975 in Moscow ) is a Russian diplomat and press officer . Since August 2015, she has been the head of the Information and Press Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation .

Life

Maria Sakharova was born into a diplomatic family in Moscow and spent her childhood in Beijing , where both of her parents worked. She studied at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations and graduated in Journalism and Orientalism in 1998. She spent her internship at the Russian Embassy in Beijing. She did her doctorate ( candidate of science , see Aspirantur ) in 2003 in history of the interpretation and change of the New Year celebrations in modern China.

From 2003 to 2005 and from 2008 to 2011 she worked at the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry. From 2005 to 2008 she was press officer in New York for the Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN ( Постоянное представительство Российской Федерации при ООН ). Sakharova was Deputy Head from 2011 to 2015 and has been Head of the Information and Press Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation since 2015.

On June 8, 2020, the President of the Russian Federation appointed Maria Sakharova to the rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary.

Sakharova is known in Russia for her participation in political talk shows on Russian television, for her comments in social networks on sensitive political topics and is one of the most cited Russian diplomats. Sakharova is also one of the most widely read Russian bloggers.

Sakharova's remarks were described by the Russian side as “quick-witted and direct”, as “sharp polemics”, but also openly as sarcastic ; by non-Russians they are described as “vulgar”, “provocative” or at best “satirical”, sometimes as Mockery or as a cue for mockery of foreign countries by Russian trolls and propaganda .

The “in its usual way” undiplomatic way was seen as a not accidental “division of labor” in which Sakharova undermined diplomacy. Der Spiegel described it as an affront that the Russian Foreign Ministry spreads untested stories . The Swiss radio SRF said that Sakharova had “downright ridiculed ” of the British Prime Minister after Great Britain had drawn attention to Russia's alleged perpetrator in the poison gas attack on Sergei Skripal , and the NZZ called it an “extremely cynical interpretation” of an incident. According to the NZZ, Sakharova tried "more ruthlessly than ever" to sow doubts about the OPCW's investigations into the Skripal case. The NZZ spoke of ridicule instead of an apology and called an almost one-hour warning lecture on mysterious deaths in the history of Great Britain "cynical and grotesque". According to Christian Neef , she overshoots the mark with her fascism comparisons. The Tages-Anzeiger wrote: "Maria Sakharova has made a mixture of malice and sarcasm her trademark."

In her free time, Maria Sakharova writes poetry. She and her husband Andrei have a daughter.
