biography

Career

Hagty's journalist career began in the 1940s when she was in high school and worked for the Capital Journal in Pierre , South Dakota. She studied journalism at the University of South Dakota . In 1957 she moved to Grand Forks , North Dakota when her husband Jack Hagerty took over the position of editor-in-chief of the Grand Forks Herald . She herself started writing features for the newspaper a few years later. She officially retired at 65 but still writes five columns a week for the Herald , including:

  • That Reminds Me - memories of historical events in the area
  • Dear Shirley - Letters to her sister Shirley in Tucson, Arizona
  • Eatbeat reviews of restaurants in and out of the area

Eatbeat column

In 1976 Hagerty started the Eatbeat column. Back then, she was working for the Herald as a feature editor and wanted to include restaurant reviews in the newspaper. Since there aren't that many restaurants in Grand Forks, she decided to review every type of restaurant - from gourmet restaurants to chain and fast food restaurants and even truck stops.

Hagerty doesn't see herself as a restaurant critic, but as a journalist. In her reviews, she mainly reports on the selection of dishes, the prices, the service and the cleanliness of the restaurant and toilets (Hagerty is of the opinion that the condition of the toilets says a lot about the restaurant). The writing style of the Eatbeat column is often referred to as " North Dakota Nice ". This is a cultural phenomenon that probably goes back to the Scandinavian roots of the region and where the residents of North Dakota and neighboring Minnesota are concerned to always behave politely and cautiously and, above all, to avoid confrontation. Accordingly, she does not write anything negative about the reviewed restaurant. If she doesn't like the food, she is more likely to write about the design and decoration of the restaurant. If the restaurant is so bad that there aren't any positives for Hagerty to write about, she'd rather not write the review.

Extract from a review of the McDonald's restaurant - January 21, 2015:

"My first visit was to McDonald's on S. Washington Street, where I ordered a senior coffee for 47 cents one morning. And with it I had a sausage egg McMuffin. That was $ 2.99 and a whopping 370 calories. You know you have eaten, and I like the combination. […] The lattes cost less than those I enjoy at Starbucks. But they are worthy. The only problem is occasionally, one of the restaurants will tell you their machine is not working. 'Not working?' I think. I almost foam at the mouth in disgust, but I try to be pleasant. "

The first thing I did in the morning was the McDonald's on S. Washington Street and ordered a senior coffee for 47 cents. Also a Sausage & Egg McMuffin. Total: $ 2.99 and an impressive 370 kcal. You can tell that you have eaten and I like the combination. [...] A Caffè Latte at McDonald's costs less than the one I usually enjoy at Starbucks. Nevertheless, it tastes good. The only problem is that the machine is out of order every now and then in a restaurant. “Out of order?” I think. I am almost furious, but I try to be nice.

Excerpt from a review of the Big Sioux Autohof Café - December 27, 1989:

"Outside, on a cold day, there may be anywhere from 30 to 70 trucks with motors idling. Inside, there's a faint smell of diesel fuel. [...] We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food at Big Sioux. I ordered a 7-ounce sirloin steak special ($ 4.50), which comes with a bowl of soup or fries and toast. Constant Companion ordered the pork dinner special ($ 3.95). It came with a cup of soup, coleslaw dressing, mashed potatoes, gravy and a dinner roll. That's an amazing amount of food for the price, we thought. Especially since it was excellent food. "

On a cold day, there are between 30 and 70 trucks with their engines running outside. Inside there is a slight smell of diesel. [...] We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at Big Sioux. I ordered a 200 gram sirloin steak on sale ($ 4.50). There was either soup or fries and toast. My constant companion ordered the “Pork Special” ($ 3.95) with soup, coleslaw, mashed potatoes with gravy, and a bun. We found this to be a surprisingly large amount for the price. Especially because it tasted so delicious.

Extract from a review of the "Le Bernardin" restaurant in New York - March 21, 2012:

"We approached Le Bernardin with awe because of its reputation as THE top restaurant in the city. [...] It was an unforgettable experience because of the elegant food and impeccable service. […] The courses kept coming. There was a sea medley, then codfish. We ate monkfish with Brussels sprouts. Then there was a Seville orange sorbet with olive oil and basil. "

We approached Le Bernadin with awe for its reputation as THE top restaurant in town. […] The experience was unforgettable because of the elegant food and impeccable service. [...] We were served one course after the other. Seafood first, then cod. We ate monkfish with Brussels sprouts. Then there was a bitter orange sorbet with olive oil and basil.

2012 "Olive Garden" review

In March 2012, Hagerty wrote a review of the Olive Garden restaurant that recently opened in Grand Forks. Olive Garden is a chain restaurant that offers Italian-American food in a "casual dining" atmosphere. Overall, the review was very positive, with Hagerty saying, "The Fettuccine Alfredo ($ 10.95) with chicken felt warm and cozy on the cold day." She described the Olive Garden Restaurant as "the largest and most beautiful restaurant in right now Grand Forks ". The day after the review was published, it was linked by various bloggers because a positive or non-ironic review of a chain restaurant was something new. After that, the review spread across the Internet, and Hagerty was interviewed by many major news outlets, including CBS This Morning , Good Morning America , The Today Show , CNN, and The New York Times . Her son, who writes for the Wall Street Journal , wrote an article about it, "When Mom Goes Viral on the Internet". After the widespread media coverage, Anthony Bourdain , an American chef and writer, collaborated with Hagerty on the book Grand Forks: A History of American Dining in 128 Reviews, a collection of their Eatbeat reviews from across the decades.

When she renewed her review the following year, this caused repeated reception in other media. In the following years, too, the media attention towards Hagerty continued.
