The Marine Division was a large division of the Imperial Navy consisting of marine infantry during the First World War .

history

After the outbreak of the First World War , the Marine Division was formed on August 23, 1914 in Kiel from the I. Sea Battalion and marine reserves who did not go to sea due to lack of space on the ships and were also not needed for coastal defense. Their purpose was to occupy the Belgian coast and the French Channel zone on the western front . The latter could not be realized due to the course of the war. With the establishment of the 2nd Marine Division on November 24, 1914, the Marine Division was reorganized shortly thereafter and set up on November 29, 1914 to form the newly formed 1st Marine Division .
