Mario Gruppioni

Mario Gruppioni (born September 13, 1901 in San Giovanni in Persiceto , † January 19, 1939 in Bologna ) was an Italian wrestler .

Career

Mario Gruppioni started wrestling as a teenager in Bologna. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. In 1925 and 1928 he was Italian middleweight champion and in 1929, 1930 and 1931 light heavyweight .

In 1925 he took part in the European Championship taking place in Milan. He won there over Janez Arsenek and Radovan Nikolic, both of Yugoslavia, and lost to Väinö Kokkinen from Finland and took 3rd place. His next start at an international championship he completed at the European championship in 1929 in Dortmund in the light heavyweight division. He won there over Josef Sasek from Czechoslovakia and Jakob Birnbaum from Austria, whom he shouldered with a hammerlock after 7.56 minutes. Against Onni Pellinen from Finland and against Robert Rupp from Germany he lost and came in 5th place. At the European Championships in Prague in 1931 he started in the middleweight division and won over Jan Galuszka from Poland and Karl Kullisaar from Estonia, while he was defeated by Ivar Johansson from Sweden and Josef Pribyl from Czechoslovakia. With these results he came back to 5th place.

In 1932 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. He started there in the light heavyweight division. After a bye in the first round, Mario Gruppioni then lost to both Onni Pellinen and Rudolf Svensson from Sweden. But since only these three wrestlers competed in this weight class, he won the Olympic bronze medal .

Mario Gruppioni, who died in 1939, did not take part in any other international championships.
