Mario Maurer ( Thai : มาริ โอ้ เมา เร่อ ; born December 4, 1988 in Bangkok ) is a Thai model and film actor . In 2007 he became an overnight star with a film role in Asia .

Life

Youth and education

He was born the younger of two sons. His father, Roland Maurer, was German and ran a cosmetics company in the Thai province of Nakhon Nayok that produced alum deodorants for export. The mother, Warunya, is ethnic Chinese in Thailand. His brother Marco was born in Germany.

Maurer attended the Catholic St. Dominic School in Bangkok. He is now studying graphic design at Ramkhamhaeng University in Bangkok.

Model and actor

In 2005 he started working as a model and appeared in commercials and music videos . He now has advertising deals with Pepsi , Sony Ericsson , The Pizza Company and Honda .

In 2007 he first appeared in a feature film . In the coming-of-age film drama The Love of Siam , he took on the role of the teenage Tong , who enters into a homosexual romance with the boy next door Mew . The film made him a star overnight in Asia. Not only in Thailand, but also in China and the Philippines , he has a large fan base. In 2008 he took on roles in the feature films Friendship and 4 Romance .

He and his brother Marco appear as the hip-hop duo PsyCho & Lil'Mario . In October 2007 they released their first CD entitled Dem Crazy Boyz .

Maurer is involved in various social projects, including collecting money for orphans.

Awards

For his role in The Love of Siam , he won the 2007 Starpics Thai Film Awards for Best Actor. In 2008 he was also honored as best actor in the Southeast Asia Film Competition category at the Cinemanila International Film Festival . The jury certified that he had a “mature acting repertoire”. In January 2009 he received an audience award as "rising film star" at the Thai Top Awards for his role in Friendship .
