Marius Patay (* 1860 in Bourg-de-Thizy ; † 1944 ) was a French inventor and technician .

life and work

Marius Patay was the son of a textile worker. He began his journeyman hike ( Tour de France des Compagnons ) (fr) at the age of 16 in Devoir . In 1885 he was a foreman in a mechanical factory in Lyon . On the ground floor under his apartment at 37 rue de Condé in Lyon, he built a 700 kg steam tricycle: Colibri .

1887 applied to the prefecture to operate his locomobile on the national roads N6 and N7 from Bully via L'Arbresle and Lyon to Vénissieux and within Lyon from Quai Jayr via Vaise to Place du Pont (now Place Gabriel-Péri). Although two of the communities concerned expressed objections, the prefect granted permission on February 4, 1888 after a thorough investigation, but with the following restrictions:

“The speed in motion must not exceed 20 km / h on the green meadow and 8 km / h when crossing inhabited areas. The movement must also be slowed down or even stopped if the approach of the locomotive by frightening horses or other animals could lead to disruptions or accidents. During the night the machine has a red light on the front and a green light on the back. These lights must be lit an hour before sunset and cannot be extinguished until half an hour after sunrise. The mechanic has to park on the right when another vehicle approaches in order to leave half the street free. "

Colibri did so well that Mr. Bernard, the owner of a country estate on the Route de Champagne in Lyon, became interested in the steam engine. He asked the manufacturer to convert it into a steam locomotive in order to run it on the field railway of his country estate.

In 1894, Marius Patay founded a general mechanical and electrical installation workshop at 157 rue Moncey in Lyon, where he built Jeanne d'Arc bicycles . The company was so successful that it moved to rue Corne du Cerf in 1907, and to rue Audibert et Lavirotte in 1921. After all, it specialized in the manufacture of electric motors with an output of up to 810 kW (1100 hp). In 1954 the company was renamed Société Anonyme des Moteurs Patay.

Colibri was acquired by the Compagnie des Eaux to transport building materials during the construction of the plant on Boulevard de Pommerol. Charles Patay, son of Marius, bought the locomotive a few years later from Etablissements Weitz in order to erect it as a memorial at the entrance to the Patay company. In 1985 André Patay sold the small locomotive to the Berliet Foundation. After the restoration, the locomotive was listed as a historical monument in 1994 in recognition of Marius Patay's ingenuity and the quality of the work.
