Marja Lehto

Marja Lehto (born March 20, 1959 ) is a Finnish diplomat . She was the Finnish ambassador in Luxembourg from 2009 to 2015 .

education

In 1984 Marja Lehto graduated from Helsinki University with a Master of Laws degree . She received a master's degree in political science there in 1989. In 2008 , she received her doctorate in law from the University of Lapland in Rovaniemi .

Diplomatic career

In 1985 she joined the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first in the international law department, then in the development department. From 1986 to 1987 she worked in the Finnish embassy in Paris , in the meantime she worked in the Foreign Ministry in Finland in 1987 in the department for the Eastern Bloc before she returned to the Paris embassy as first secretary that same year. From 1991 to 1992 she was State Secretary in the Department of Contracts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , from 1992 to 1995 there was Counselor and First Secretary in the Department of International Law. From 1995 to 2000 she held a position at the Permanent Mission of Finland to the United Nations .

From 2000 to 2009 she headed the International Law Department in the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During this time she was the Finnish envoy to the ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court in 2002 and from 2005 to 2006 she was the chairman of the Committee of Experts of the Council of Europe on Combating Terrorism (CODEXTER). During the Finnish Presidency of the European Union in 2006, she chaired the Working Group on Territorial Cooperation (COTER) and the Directorate-General for External Relations (RELEX).

On September 1, 2009, Marja Lehto was appointed Finnish ambassador to Luxembourg as the successor to Tarja Laitiainen , who moved from the embassy in Luxembourg to the embassy in Bulgaria . The Finnish embassy in Luxembourg was closed on August 31, 2015. Since then, the Finnish embassy in Brussels has been responsible for Luxembourg .

She is married and has one child.
