Sir Mark Alexander Popham Carleton-Smith , KCB , CBE (born February 9, 1964 in Bielefeld ) is a British Army officer who , as a general, has been Chief of the British Army General Staff since 2018 . This makes him the most senior officer in the British Army within the United Kingdom's armed forces .

Life

Mark Alexander Popham Carleton-Smith, son of the future Major General Michael Carleton-Smith, completed his education at Cheltenham College and Eton College and began studying political science and contemporary history at Hatfield College, University of Durham in 1982 , which he received in 1985 with a bachelor's degree of Arts (BA). He then joined as a lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) in the infantry regiment Irish Guards , and found in the subsequent period numerous uses as an officer and staff officer such as commander ( Commanding Officer ) of 22 Special Air Service Regiment , a regiment of special forces SAS ( Special Air Service ) .

As Brigadier General (Brigadier) Carleton-Smith succeeded Brigadier Ed Butler as commander of the 16th Airmobile Brigade ( 16 Air Assault Brigade ) and remained in this position until October 2008, when Brigadier James Chiswell was his successor. Under his command, the brigade was stationed in Afghanistan between April and October 2008 during the war . On his return he was in 2009 successor to Brigadier General in January Nick Carter Director of Army Planning and Resources (Director of Army Plans and Resources) in the General Staff of the Army and held this post until his replacement by Brigadier Alistair S. Dickinson in October 2011th

In February 2012 sparked Major General (Major-General) Mark Carleton-Smith, Major General Jacko Page as Director Special Forces ( Special Forces ) , and remained in this use by April 2015 then again Brigadier James Chiswell became his successor. He then returned to the General Staff of the Army in April 2015, where he became the first Director, Army Strategy . He held this post until March 2016, when Major General James FP Swift succeeded him there. Mark Carleton-Smith then moved up as Lieutenant General (Lieutenant-General) to the Ministry of Defense and released there in April 2016 Lieutenant General Gordon Messenger as Deputy Chief of Defense Staff for military strategy and operations (Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff (Military Strategy and Operations)) from. He remained in this position until he was replaced by Douglas Chalmers in June 2018.

In June 2018, General Mark Alexander Popham Carleton-Smith succeeded General Nick Carter again, this time as Chief of the General Staff of the British Army. Carleton-Smith, who is also Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), was made Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath on December 31, 2018 and has since been named "Sir".
