Gordon Kenneth Messenger , KCB , DSO & Bar , OBE (born April 15, 1962 in Dundee , Scotland ) is a former British general in the Royal Marines , who last between 2016 and 2019 was Vice Chief of Defense Staff of the United Kingdom Armed Forces was.

Life

Officer training, Afghan war and Iraq war

After attending the King Edward VI School in Southampton, founded in 1553, Gordon Kenneth Messenger began studying geography at the University of Leicester , graduating in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He subsequently resigned as lieutenant (Second Lieutenant) in the Royal Marines one. In the following years he found numerous uses as an officer and staff officer and took part as a lieutenant colonel (Lieutenant-Colonel) among other things in the war in Afghanistan . On October 30, 2001, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his services . Between 2002 and 2003 he was in command of the 40th Marine Infantry Command (40 Commando Royal Marines) . Later he took over as Colonel (Colonel) and the Iraq war part and was there for the merits on 19 April 2003 with the Distinguished Service Order awarded (DSO).

As a Brigadier General (Brigadier) , Messenger was on the Defense Staff between April and September 2007, first as Director of Force Development & Strategy Management, and then from September 2007 to September 2008 as Head of Joint Operations and Overseas Operations (Director of Joint Commitments & Overseas Operations) . After that, he was again used in Afghanistan and served between October 2008 and April 2009, commander of the 3rd Marine Commando Brigade (3 Commando Brigade RM) as well as in personal union also commander in Helmand used Task Force Helmand . On September 11, 2009, he received a clasp (bar) for the DSO for his return to Afghanistan .

In November 2010, Gordon Messenger joined as Major General (Major-General) to the Permanent Joint Headquarters PJHQ (Permanent Joint Headquarters) of Northwood , where he was deputy until August 2012 chief of staff for joint operations (Deputy Chief, Joint Operations) . As Lieutenant General (Lieutenant General) , he was the successor to Lt. Gen. James Everard , between July 2014 and his replacement by Lieutenant General Mark Carleton-Smith in April 2016 as Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff for Operations (Deputy Chief of the Defense Staff, Operations) and was in this use on June 13, 2015 Companion des Order of the Bath (CB).

Most recently, General Messenger in May 2016, succeeding Air Chief Marshal Stuart Peach Vice-Chief of Defense Staff (Vice-Chief of the Defense Staff) of the British Armed Forces and remained in this use until his retirement in May 2019 whereupon Admiral Timothy Fraser took his place. Between 2016 and 2019 he was also adjutant general ( aide-de-camp general ) of Queen Elizabeth II and was made Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) on June 11, 2016 , which led to the addition of "Sir" to his name. He ended his military career in May 2019.
