Mark Kosower

Mark Kosower (born December 17, 1976 in Eau Claire / Wisconsin ) is an American cellist who also worked as a university professor.

Live and act

Kosower had his first cello lessons as a child from his father, the cellist Paul Kosower. Together with his father and sister Paula he toured as the Dolce Cello Trio in Europe and North America; there were also radio appearances. Later he studied at Indiana University with Janos Starker (graduation 1998) and at the Juilliard School with Joel Krosnick (Master 2001).

Kosower was a member of Chamber Music Two , a residency program of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center . From 2006 to 2010 he was principal cellist with the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra . Since 2010 he has been principal cellist of the Cleveland Orchestra . He has also performed with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra , the Houston Symphony Orchestra , the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra , the Minnesota Orchestra , the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra , the Orquestra de Paris and the Orquestra Sinfônica Brasileira and under conductors such as Jorge Mester , Robert Moody and Andrey Boreyko , Tito Muñoz , Franz Welser-Möst and Stefan Sanderling . In addition to the classical repertoire for cello, he also played lesser-known works by Alberto Ginastera , Miklos Rozsa , Friedrich Gulda and Victor Herbert, among others . At the Naxos label he recorded the cello concertos by Victor Herbert and Eberhard Klemmstein .

As a chamber musician, Kosower has participated in the Santa Fe Festival , the Eastern Music Festival , the North Shore Chamber Music Festival , the Pacific Music Festival , the Breckenridge Music Festival and the Colorado's Strings Music Festival . He often performs in concerts with his wife, the pianist Jee-Won Oh .

From 2002 to 2006 Kosower was Professor of Cello and Chamber Music at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music ; from 2010 to 2020 he taught at the Cleveland Institute of Music . He led the Bach for Humanity project and is the President of the Cleveland Cello Society .

Kosower was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant , a SONY Grant , the Great Prizes at the Irving Klein International String Competition and the WAMSO Competition of the Minnesota Orchestra, and took top places in the International Pablo Casals Cello Competition and the Concours de violoncelle Rostropovitch .
