Mark Leno

Mark Leno (born September 24, 1951 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was a member of the California Senate from December 1, 2008 to November 2016 .

education

Leno attended the University of Colorado at Boulder . He then moved to the American College in Jerusalem , where he earned his bachelor's degree in art. In New York , he studied at the Hebrew Union College for two years .

Political career

In 1998 Leno was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors . From 2002 he was a member of the California State Assembly , in which he represented constituency 13, which consists of the eastern part of San Francisco ; In 2004 and 2006 he was re-elected. After he announced in 2007 that he wanted to run against incumbent Carole Migden in the democratic primary elections for the state senate , he then prevailed and also won the actual election. He was a member of the California Senate until November 2016. His successor in the electoral district for the California Senate was Scott Wiener .

Same sex marriages

In 2005 Leno introduced Law AB 849, which was supposed to legalize same-sex marriages . It was the first law on the subject to be passed in the United States. It passed both chambers of the California State Legislature , but failed due to Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's veto .

Leno continued his initiative in 2007 with Law AB 43, which aims to protect religious freedom and civil marriage.

Transgender rights

He successfully campaigned for identity gender discrimination to be incorporated into California's Anti-Discrimination Act.

Leno recognized transgender activist Theresa Sparks as California's first transgender woman of the year.

Private life

Leno founded Budget Signs, Inc. in 1978, and later ran it with his partner until he died of AIDS in 1990 .
