Mark Smed

Mark Smed (born June 23, 1961 in Munich ) is a former American basketball player .

career

Smed was born in Munich while his father was  stationed as a US soldier in the Federal Republic of Germany and grew up in the US state of Minnesota  in Fairmont , Sleepy Eye and Marshall . In 1979 he was named Athlete of the Year by Marshall High School. The 2.05 meter tall indoor player moved to Augustana University ( South Dakota state ) in 1979 . There he majored in geography and played for the college's basketball team. In 108 games Smed scored a total of 1795 points for Augustana (average: 16.6 per game) and was thus on the first place of the "eternal basket hunter list" of Augustana University when he left it in 1983. He also had 776 rebounds (average: 7.2 per game) and 98 blocks in 108 matches.

In the 1983 draft of the NBA , the Indiana Pacers secured the rights to Smed in the tenth selection round. He completed trial training sessions with the Pacers and the Minnesota Timberwolves , but was never used in the US professional league. He moved to the Swedish club Ockelbo BK for the 1983/84 season, where he played until 1986. Then Smed played from 1986 to 1995 at Oldenburg TB in Germany, in the 1987/88 season in the basketball league , otherwise in the 2nd basketball league . Smed then returned to the United States and worked as a financial advisor in Minnesota.

In 1994, Smed was named Sportsman of the Year in the Oldenburg Athletes' Choice. In 1995 it was accepted into the Sports Honor Gallery at Augustana University and in 2018 into that of Marshall High School.
