Mark Staff Brandl (* 1955 in Peoria (Illinois) ) is an artist and art historian at the Liechtenstein Art School . Brandl is one of the artists of the "Mongrel Art" / "Mischlingskunst". The renowned painter was born near Chicago in 1955 and lived there for a long time. He trained in art, art history and literary theory at the University of Illinois (BFA), Illinois State University (Masters), Columbia Pacific University (MA) and the University of Zurich (PhD). Mark Staff Brandl has lived mainly in Switzerland since 1988. Brandl is known in the art scene in Chicago, New York and Europe.

Exhibitions (selection)

Brandl has been an international artist since 1980, has received various awards and has gone public with numerous publications and exhibitions. His artistic work has been shown in galleries and museums in Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Egypt, the Caribbean and in cities such as Paris, Moscow, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. His most recent exhibitions include “painting installations” in St. Gallen , Berlin and Zurich , and a performance lecture at documenta 13 in Kassel in 2012. His latest project, which was initiated in 2017, is a series of lectures on art history. The lectures are presented in an entertaining way and become art in themselves, especially because the presentations on the stage of paintings and "painting installations" are performed. Brandl calls this project, and himself in it, " Dr Great Art ."

Some of his works have been shown by the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Thurgau Art Museum in the Ittingen Charterhouse , the St. Gallen Art Museum , the Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles) , the Graphic Collection of the ETH Zurich , the International Museum of Cartoon Art , the Kunstmuseum Olten and others.

Publications

As an art critic, he is a regular correspondent editor for The Art Book (London) and Art in America (New York).

Along with painter Wesley Kimler, Brandl is a member of the Sharkpack artist group . He writes an art-critical e-zine for Sharkforum and works on the popular Bad at Sports podcast .
