Mark Wood

Mark Winthrop Wood (* 20th century) is an American violinist who plays almost exclusively the electric violin. He is a founding member and was the conductor of the string instrument musicians of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra . He is also the founder of Wood Violins , which make electric violins .

biography

The young years

Wood grew up in Long Island. His mother was a pianist, his father an abstract painter. At the age of 12, Wood played the violin and had lessons from Dr. Richard Rusack from Paul D. Schreiber High School in Port Washington / New York . While still at school, he and his three brothers formed the string quartet The Wood String Quartet . They toured the Northeast of the USA and played works by Ludwig van Beethoven .

Due to Wood's growing skill on the violin, he received a scholarship at the Juilliard School of Music and studied with the violin teacher William Lincer, among others.

Wood returned home with the Juilliard Scholarship and after a short stay in Boston. He said; He spent five years in his father's studio and taught improvising and improving violins himself. Mark says he still uses these techniques and practices today.

Musician and composer

Wood is a founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and was an active musician there for 13 years until 2009. The large number of musicians with whom he played or with whom he is represented on various CDs is remarkable. He played with Celine Dion , Billy Joel , Steve Vai , Lenny Kravitz , Jordan Rudess , Derek Sherinian , Simon Phillips , Glenn Hughes , Mike Portnoy , James Labrie , Steve Morse , Steve Vai, Dee Snider , Paul Ranieri and many more. Some of them worked with Mark on the 1999 ELP tribute album Knife Edge .

Wood received the Emmy for musical composition on the 2002 Tour de France . Parts of the compositions for the electric violin quartet Nest of Vipers are also by him. The musicians of this violin quartet came from the Juilliard School, to which Wood also belonged.

Wood's company Wood Violins makes custom electric violins, cellos, and pseudo-rock star apparel. Wood started making his first violin when he was 12 years old.

Teacher

Wood attended many schools in the United States with his music program: Electrify your Strings. He is a lecturer at the annual Mark O'Connor Fiddle Camps and was elected to the 2008 Board of Directors of the American String Teachers Association . In January 2008 his book Electrify your Strings was published . From 2010 on he held one-week workshops with various top-class world-class rock musicians at the Mark Wood Rock Orchestra Camp, followed by a final concert for all students.

Private life

He is married to singer Laura Kaye and they have one child together. The son is called Elijah Wood, was born in 1996 and is a passionate drummer.
