The Markanda is a left tributary of the Ghaggar in north-west India .

It rises in the Siwaliks 30 km northwest of the city of Paonta Sahib in the state of Himachal Pradesh . Initially, the Markanda flows 30 km in a predominantly westerly direction through the mountains. 50 km east-southeast of Chandigarh , the river reaches the lowlands of the Siwaliks. The Markanda now flows in a southerly, later in a southwest and west direction through the state of Haryana . The river takes the Begna on the right. Later the river passes the city of Shahbad . The Markanda flows into the Ghaggar 25 km south of Patiala . 15 km above the mouth, the Tangri meets the river on the right. The Markanda has a length of about 150 km.

The historical name of the Markanda is Aruna .
