Markku Erik Salminen (born September 9, 1946 in Kokkola , † January 6, 2004 in Järvenpää ) was a Finnish orienteer and long-distance runner .

Salminen was first Finnish champion in orienteering in 1967. He then came to his first international assignments. For example, with the Finnish relay team in 1967 he was runner-up at the Nordic Championships in Denmark, and in 1968 he was runner-up in Sweden. In 1969 season Finland 3 with Tuomo Peltola , Markku Salminen, Matti Mäkinen and Raimo Nissi surprisingly won the title at the Nordic Championships. Salminen won the Jukola for the first time in 1970 with the Helsingin Suunnistajat club . With his later club Järvenpään Palo he was able to win the Jukola again in 1978. At world championships in orienteering, Markku Salminen won again a silver and a bronze medal in the relay race in 1974 and 1976. He achieved his best individual result in 1976 with a fifth place.

Markku Salminen celebrated his greatest successes in long-distance running in the early 1970s. In 1970 he was the third Finnish champion in the 10,000 meter run behind Rauno Mattila and Pekka Tiihonen . In 1971 and 1972 he started in the Boston Marathon and was able to place eighth there in 1971 and tenth in 1972 with 2:20 hours. He set his best marathon time on March 28, 1971 with 2: 16: 26.9 hours in Mäntsälä .

At Finnish championships he won the title on the long distance in 1967, 1968, 1974 and 1976. In 1970 and 1973 he was Finnish champion in night orienteering. With the Helsingin Suunnistajat he won the Finnish relay championship in 1967, 1971 and 1973, with Järvenpään Palo in 1975 and 1976.
