Gähler made his debut in the Ski Jumping World Cup on December 30, 1986 and reached 89th place in Oberstdorf . In the following competitions, too, he always ended up on the back positions. Despite a lack of success in the following years, he was nominated for the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . There he reached the 44th place on the normal hill and 35th on the large hill. In the team competition he reached 8th place together with Stephan Zünd , Sylvain Freiholz and Martin Trunz . At the ski flying world championship in Harrachov in 1992 , he achieved the best individual result of his career with 23rd place, but again remained without World Cup points. After the 1992/93 season he ended his active ski jumping career.

Markus Gähler died on May 11, 1997 in a fire brigade in his home town while trying to save human lives. Shortly before, he had been nominated as the Swiss national coach.
