Markus Gross 2010

Markus Gross (born June 14, 1963 in Saarland ) is Professor of Computer Science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH) , Dean of the Computer Graphics Laboratory, and Director of Disney Research, Zurich. His research areas are computer graphics and computer vision , specializing in physics-based modeling, computer animation, immersive displays and video technology. Gross has already published more than 400 scientific papers on algorithms and methods in his field and now holds more than 30 patents. During his time as a professor of computer science, Gross has successfully supervised more than 50 doctoral students.

academic career

Markus Gross received his diploma in electrical engineering and information technology (1986) and his PhD in computer graphics and image processing (1989), both from Saarland University . From 1990 to 1994 he was a research assistant at the Computer Graphics Center of the Technical University of Darmstadt , from which he received his Venia Legendi in 1995 . In 1994 he switched to the chair for computer science at the ETH Zurich , where he finally founded the Computer Graphics Laboratory. From 2004 to 2008 he also held the position of chairman of the chair for computer science at ETH Zurich. Since 2008 Markus Gross has been Director of Disney Research Zurich, one of two research institutions of the Walt Disney Company worldwide .

Markus Gross was repeatedly a member of the paper committees of all major graphics conferences such as ACM SIGGRAPH 2005, IEEE Visualization, Eurographics, Pacific Graphics, and many others. Thanks to his great scientific contribution in his field, he was named co-chair of the paper committees of IEEE Visualization in 1999 and 2002 and of Eurographics 2000. In 2005 he became the first European to be appointed chairman of the ACM SIGGRAPH paper committee. He was also a member of the organizing committees of various international symposia and the editorial advisory boards of various international journals and was Associate Editor of the IEEE CG&A.

Due to the successes in his research, Gross was appointed a member of several academies and important research institutions. He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Institute for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI) in Saarbrücken, the Board of Trustees of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics, the VR-VIS Research Center in Vienna and he is a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences . He was also elected a member of the Executive Committee of the Eurographics and ACM organizations.

Disney Research Zurich (DRZ)

In 2008 Markus Gross was appointed director of Disney Research Zurich. It is one of three worldwide research facilities of the Walt Disney Company . More than 100 scientists in Pittsburgh, Los Angeles and Zurich are working on a variety of technological innovations. In close cooperation with the Computer Graphics Laboratory (CGL) at ETH Zurich , Disney Research Zurich creates video technology (image processing, video coding, 3D, perceptual studies), computer cinematography, human and facial animation, wireless network technology, and the calculation and animation of material properties , as well as acquisition technologies of the future. The resulting technologies are used in various business areas by the Walt Disney Company.

Awards

Markus Gross has received several prestigious awards. In 2013 he received the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize, which honors outstanding technological innovations with strong practical relevance. In the same year, Gross also received the Konrad Zuse Medal from the German Society for Computer Science (GI). It is the most important award for achievements in IT in Germany. In 2013 Markus Gross also received a Technical Achievement Award, also known as the “Tech Oscar”, from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences . He received this Technical Achievement Award together with Nils Thuerey , Theo Kim and Doug James for the development of a method for the efficient and effective simulation of smoke and explosion effects. Gross received the Swiss ICT Champions Award 2011 from swissICT, the umbrella organization of the Schweizer Informatik-Werkplatz, after receiving the “Outstanding Technical Contributions Award” EUROGRAPHICS 2010 one year earlier.

Results of his research

Markus Gross' research was successfully adapted in the film industry and led to the founding of several companies and the development of various software platforms.

The wavelet turbulence software, for which Gross received the Technical Achievement Award, was a breakthrough in the film industry and established itself as the industry standard for simulating smoke and explosion effects. In a short time she was featured in more than 20 Hollywood productions by special effects studios such as “Avatar”, “Kung Fu Panda”, “Monsters vs. Aliens ”,“ Sherlock Holmes ”,“ Iron Man 3 ”,“ Man of Steel ”,“ Battleship ”etc. are used.

Through his research on physically based modeling, he made a groundbreaking contribution to the simulation of surgical interventions on the face (FACE Project). This led to the founding of the spin-off company Cyfex AG in 2000.

In 2002 Markus Gross and Matthias Müller-Fischer founded the Novodex company , which specialized in middleware for physics modeling in computer games. NovodeX was eventually selected by Ageia as the software platform for their Ageia - PhysX PPU card. In 2004, NovodeX, along with all products and employees, was taken over by Ageia and the middleware developed became the basis of the PhysX SDK 2.x series. At Ageia, Markus Gross was Chairman of the Technical Advisory Board. In 2008 Ageia was taken over by Nvidia itself .

After his success with NovodeX, Markus Gross' research concentrated on the area of 3D video recording, compression and editing of visual effects. Continuous improvements in the developed technologies led to the foundation of the startup LiberoVision. Libero Vision was finally taken over by Vizrt in 2012 and renamed "Viz Libero".

Markus Gross' most recent project before Disney Research dealt with the information-theoretical modeling of dyslexia. He developed a statistical model and a multimodal recording system to make language learning easier for dyslexic people. This resulted in a multimedia learning software called Dybuster and the company of the same name Dybuster AG.
