Markus Hellwich

Markus Hellwich (born January 31,  1967 in Lübeck ; † August 15,  2016 ) was a German basketball official .

Life

Hellwich came to basketball at TSV Travemünde in 1984 after playing table tennis in the same club since 1980. From 1984 to 1994 he was a member of the referee committee of the Basketball Association Schleswig-Holstein (BVSH) and was responsible for assigning the referee teams to the games in what was then the South / East district. From 1994 he headed the sports organization division at the BVSH, and in 1998 he was elected BVSH chairman. In February 2005 Hellwich, who worked professionally as a wholesale and foreign trade merchant, also took over the presidency of TSV Travemünde.

In June 2008 he received the Golden Badge of Honor from the State Sports Association of Schleswig-Holstein as well as the Silver Badge of Honor of the German Basketball Federation (DBB) “in recognition of the services to the development of basketball in the Federal Republic of Germany.” In May 2010 he received the Golden Badge of Honor from the BVSH and the German Basketball Federation awarded the gold badge of honor.

At the political level, Hellwich, who was not part of the party, was involved in the local council of Travemünde , of which he was chairman from February 2009. In April 2012, he resigned from this office due to time constraints.

Hellwich remained chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein basketball association until 2010. In 2011 he was awarded the Silver Badge of Honor by TSV Travemünde. In May 2011 he was appointed honorary president of the Schleswig-Holstein basketball association.

Hellwich, who suffered from kidney disease, died on August 15, 2016 at the age of 49.
