life and work

After graduating from high school and studying industrial design at the Braunschweig University of Art, Markus Matthias Krüger initially trained as a physiotherapist. After graduating, he began studying painting with Annette Schröter at the Leipzig School of Graphics and Book Art in 2005 , where he also completed his master's degree from 2010 to 2013.

Markus Matthias Krüger constructs his landscape paintings in his studio in the Leipzig cotton spinning mill . He shows “well thought-out compositions of almost mathematical precision, the precisely calculated order of which merges into a convincing picture whole of the highest artistry.” His deserted landscapes show the traces of human habitation and cultivation.

In 2016, the Museum of Fine Arts in Leipzig bought the large-format painting See , which shows an exactly square lake in the middle of a deciduous forest with a baroque sky. "Krügers' stylistics correspond to this incursion of the unusual into the familiar." His retrospective Hortus , which was shown in 2017 in the Panorama Museum Bad Frankenhausen , in the Kunsthalle Rostock and in 2018 in the Museum de Fundatie Zwolle , showed over 100 works from ten years of creativity Krüger's artistic development. With the opening of his exhibition in the Kunsthalle Rostock on July 1, 2017, he was awarded the Wolfgang Mattheuer and Ursula Mattheuer Neustädt Prize for contemporary art.
