The St. Markus Church , also called Markus Chapel , in the Fuggerei in Augsburg was built from 1580 to 1582 and rebuilt by 1950 after being destroyed in the Second World War . As an architectural monument, it is entered in the Bavarian list of monuments.

history

It is possible that the master mason Hans Holl , who was in the service of Fugger, was commissioned by Markus and Philipp Eduard Fugger to build the Markus chapel in the Fuggerei in 1580 . The consecration under the patronage of the Evangelist Markus took place in 1582. It served as a replacement for the Barefoot and St. Jakob Church, which had become Protestant, and was the only Catholic church in Jakobervorstadt until the Franciscan monastery church Heilig-Grab was built . The residents of the Fuggerei were obliged to pray for the founder every day. In 1731, under the mason Johann Schuster, a baroque transformation took place. The no longer preserved ceiling fresco was created by the artist Johann Peter Domer. The Antwerp sculptor Jakob Gerstens provided the altar at that time . The altarpiece was bought by Maximilian Joseph Graf Fugger von Kirchheim.

During the air raids on Augsburg on the night of February 25th to 26th, 1944, the church burned down completely. During the reconstruction by 1950, it was decided to change the interior character. Instead of the vault, a flat ceiling has now been installed.

architecture

The building with a rectangular floor plan and a straight choir closure is provided with a barrel vault with stitch caps and rounded windows on the sides.

Furnishing

inner space

The wooden coffered ceiling from around 1550/60, bought from Munich's private property, probably comes from the earlier Fugger foundation house near St. Anna . As a replacement for the destroyed high altar, there is an early Baroque altar in a round arch niche, which shows the saved altar sheet by Jacopo Palma il Giovane . A small winged altar around 1570 is attached to the east wall. It shows Markus Fugger, his wife Sibylla and his sons and daughters. It also comes from Fugger property and was originally in the house chapel of the Augsburg Fuggerhaus St. Sebastian . The other equipment includes an organ around 1730 from the workshop of the Silbermann family . On the west wall is an epitaph for Ulrich Fugger by Anton Daucher, from the Fugger Chapel of St. Anna.
