Marlin Edgar Olmsted (born May 21, 1847 in Ulysses , Potter County , Pennsylvania , †  July 19, 1913 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1897 and 1913 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Marlin Olmsted attended public schools in his home country and the Coudersport Academy , also in Pennsylvania. After that he worked for the financial authority of his state for some time. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1878, he began to work in this profession in Harrisburg . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1891 he was elected delegate to the planned Pennsylvania Constitutional Convention.

In the congressional election of 1896 , Olmsted was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 14th  constituency of his state , where he succeeded Ephraim Milton Woomer on March 4, 1897 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1913 . Since 1903 he represented the 18th District of Pennsylvania there as the successor to Thaddeus Maclay Mahon . During his time as Congressman, the Spanish-American War of 1898 fell . From 1901 to 1909 Olmsted headed the second electoral committee ( Committee on Elections No. 2 ). He was then chairman of the Committee on Insular Affairs between 1909 and 1911 . In 1905, he was one of the congressmen tasked with conducting impeachment proceedings against Federal Judge Charles Swayne .

In 1912, Marlin Olmsted renounced another congressional candidacy. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced again as a lawyer in Harrisburg. He died in New York on July 19, 1913 and was buried in Harrisburg.
