Marmaduke James Hussey, Baron Hussey of North Bradley (born August 29, 1923 in London - † December 27, 2006 ibid), known as Duke Hussey , was an important figure in the British media landscape and from 1986 to 1996 for two terms the chairman of the BBC Board of Governors .

Education and early career

Marmaduke Hussey received his lessons at Rugby School and Trinity College , Oxford . During the Second World War he served in the British Infantry Regiment of the Grenadier Guards and was seriously wounded in 1944 at Anzio in Italy. He became a German prisoner of war , in which his leg had to be amputated due to his injury, after which he was allowed to return home. He now worked for the Associated Newspapers , where he had a long career that culminated in his appointment as Managing Director. He then worked from 1971 to 1980 as managing director and general director of the Times Newspapers.

Chairman of the BBC

In October 1986, after the death of Stuart Young , Hussey was appointed chairman of the British broadcaster BBC . He owed this appointment to his good relations with the ruling Conservative Party led by Margaret Thatcher . Within three months of joining the BBC, he forced General Director Alasdair Milne to resign. This was preceded by numerous disputes between the BBC and the Conservative government. In the 1990s, Hussey fell out with general manager John Birt over his leadership style and panorama of controversial interview with Princess Diana in 1995.

On September 11, 1996, Hussey was raised to the nobility as a Life Peer with the title Baron Hussey of North Bradley , of North Bradley in the County of Wiltshire .

Hussey had resigned some board positions when he started working for the BBC but remained chairman of the Royal Marsden Hospital until 1998 .

family

On April 25, 1959, Marmaduke Hussey married Lady Susan Katharine Waldegrave , who was 15 years his junior , with whom he had their son James Arthur, born in 1961, and their daughter Katharine Elizabeth, born in 1964. His wife, now known as Lady Susan Hussey, is a chambermaid of Queen Elizabeth II and godmother of her grandson Prince William .

Marmaduke Hussey died in London on December 27, 2006 at the age of 83.
