The marbled electric ray ( Torpedo marmorata ) is a skate art from the family of the torpedo . Other terms used in German-speaking countries are marmorated electric rays , marbled torpedo rays or just electric rays, although the latter can lead to confusion with other species of the Torpedinidae family.
properties
The species is known for its ability to produce electrical discharges to stun prey such as small fish or crustaceans . Marble electric rays are nocturnal hunters who often burrow in the sand of the sea floor during the day, leaving only the eyes and breathing hole uncovered. Mostly they stay near reefs or in brackish water in deep regions from close to the surface to a depth of 370 m. The largest specimens are up to a meter long and weigh three kilograms.
distribution
Marble electric rays occur, for example, in the eastern Atlantic near Northern Great Britain , at the Cape of Good Hope ( South Africa ) and in the Mediterranean .
