The Marne River is a river in the east of the Australian state of South Australia . It is named after the French river Marne .

River course

It rises on the eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges between Eden Valley and Springton . From there the river continues its course through Cambrai and flows into the Murray River at Wongulla .

Origin of name

Until 1917 the river was called Rhine River South (Southern Rhine ). Due to the mood against Germany as a result of the First World War , it was renamed the Marne River after the French River Marne , where important battles of the First World War took place.

history

In the time before the European settlement, the Ngarrindjeri , an Aboriginal tribe, used the valley of the Marne River as a route from the Murray River into the hills to trade with Peramangk , another tribe of the indigenous people in the Barossa Valley . The bark of the eucalyptus trees in this valley was also thicker than that of the trees in the Murray valley, so that it could be better used for building canoes. The Aborigines originally called the river Taingappa (English: footpath, trade route).
