Marrion Douglass Roe (born April 3, 1935 in Invercargill ; died June 29, 2017 in Whangarei ), married Marrion Beck , was a New Zealand swimmer.

Career

Roe, who came from the far south of New Zealand, moved to Hamilton on the North Island during her life and competed in national championships for Waikato .

In national swimming championships she was able to win the first time in 1952 when she took first place in freestyle swimming over 110 yards . She was able to defend this title in the following years from 1953 to 1956. In 1954 and 1956 she was also the New Zealand champion over the double distance and in 1956 she also won the 440 yard freestyle title.

Internationally, Roe appeared at two major events. At the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in 1954 in Vancouver , Canada , she was able to achieve fourth place on her parade discipline, the 110 yards freestyle. Over 440 yards, however, she was eliminated in the preliminary round. At the Olympic Summer Games in Melbourne in 1956 , she was seventh in the 100 m freestyle in a time of 1: 05.6 minutes. Here, too, she did not get beyond the heats over four times the distance.

She swam her personal best in 1955 when she completed the 100 yards in 59.0 seconds. At the time, this was the fastest time ever achieved in the southern hemisphere . It was only 0.9 seconds above the world record of the American Judy Braskamp .

Roe was married to John Aitchison Beck, director of the Waikato Swimming Center , from 1957 until his death in 2010 . She died in June 2017 at the age of 88.
