Marshall is a town in the Kusilvak Census Area in the southwest of the US state Alaska with 414 inhabitants.

Geographical location

Marshall is located 31  m above sea level in the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta on the east bank of the Yukon River on the northeastern border of the Yukon Delta National Wildlife Refuge .

There is an airfield near the village , the Marshall Don Hunter Sr. Airport ( IATA airport code : MLL; ICAO code : PADM) with a 976 meter long gravel runway.

history

The place was the Yupik - Eskimos as Massercullermiut known a sump at the lower reaches of the Yukon that caught salmon there. In 1880 an expedition came across an Eskimo village here, which was called Uglouaia in the Yupik language .

In the course of the gold rush in 1913, the place became a gold rush town called Fortuna Ledge , after the first child born in the village, Fortuna Hunter, where river boats could dock well due to the location of the place on an arm of the Yukon. In 1915 a post office was built and the population rose to more than 1000 residents. The village was later named after Thomas Riley Marshall , who was Vice President of the United States from 1913 to 1921, and known as Marshall's Landing . After the intoxication subsided, the place almost turned into a ghost town. After the Village became a City 2nd Class in 1970 , it was renamed again to Fortuna Ledge , but it was still generally referred to as Marshall's Landing , so in 1984 it was officially named Marshall .

Today the place is mostly a residential area of ​​the Yupik again.
