background

The script is an adaptation of the opera of the same name Martha or: Der Markt von Richmond by Friedrich von Flotow .

The film was produced by the Deutsche Lichtspiel-Opern Gesellschaft mbH Berlin. The owner of the film rights was Jakob Beck. It was 1620 meters long (approx. 69 minutes) or four files at 1432 meters (approx. 78 minutes).

The outdoor shots took place in Wernigerode .

The film was recorded with the patented process developed by Jakob Beck : a clearly visible strip with notes copied into the lower edge of the image enabled conductors and singers to accompany the music to the film in approximately synchronism.

The Berlin police released the film for young people (No. 39984). He was also examined by the teachers in Hamburg (No. 5643).

In October 1916 there was a press screening in front of invited guests in the Apolltheater, the first public screening took place on December 8, 1916 in the Mozartsaal Berlin . Giuseppe Becce was the conductor of these performances .

On November 15, 1923, the Munich police censored the film (M.1239) and declared it free for minors.

Karl Anton shot a sound film version of Martha in 1935 , which was shown in cinemas at the beginning of 1936.
