Martha Abelsen
Martha Abelsen (born June 18, 1957 in Nuuk ) is a Greenlandic politician ( Siumut ), civil servant and social worker .
Life
Martha Abelsen attended the Folkeskole in Nuuk from 1965 to 1975 and then to 1979 the socio-educational high school in Copenhagen . In the same year she was still working as a pedagogical school assistant in Copenhagen. From 1980 to 1981 she worked at the day care institution Sungiusarfik Ikinngut in Ilulissat . From 1981 to 1985 she was a foster mother at the school in Ilulissat. From 1985 to 1990 she headed the Sungiusarfik Ikinngut . From 1990 to 1991 she was a Greenland Advisor in the Vestsjællands Office. From 1991 to 1996 she was the office manager in the Greenland Social Directorate. From 1996 to 2001 she was Director of the Health Directorate of the Greenland Government and from 2001 to 2004 that of the Social Directorate. In 2005 she worked for a few months as a consultant in the Ministry of the Interior and then until 2009 she was the secretary of the Nuuk Municipality . From 2009 to 2010 she was a government adviser for disabled people. She was chairwoman of KANUKOKA from 2010 to 2015 . From 2015 to 2017 she was head of department in the Ministry of the Interior and then until 2018 in social administration.
Martha Abelsen began her political career in the 2008 local elections. She was elected to the council of the new Kommuneqarfik Sermersooq with the second highest number of votes from the Siumut candidates . She then ran for parliamentary elections in 2009 , but missed the Inatsisartut . In the local elections in 2013, she received the second highest number of votes of all candidates in her municipality, making her vice mayor. She ran for the 2015 Folketing election , but was not elected. In November 2015, she resigned from her position as a local council member. On October 24, 2018, she was appointed Minister of Health, Social Affairs and Justice as the successor to the resigned Doris J. Jensen . In May 2020 she handed over the health department to Anna Wangenheim , but received the family department in return.
