Martha Rockwell (born April 26, 1944 in Providence , Rhode Island ) is a former American cross-country skier .

Rockwell was American cross-country skiing champion several times between 1969 and 1975. In 1975 she was able to win five out of six races in Europe in the World Cup and reached tenth place in the overall standings . In 1972 she took part in the Winter Olympics for the first time in Sapporo , Japan . Over 5 and 10 kilometers, she finished 18 and 16. Together with her teammates Barbara Britch and Alison Owen-Spencer , she came 11th in the relay. At her second Olympic participation in 1976 in Innsbruck , Austria , she placed 28th and 36th over 5 and 10 kilometers respectively. In the relay competition over 4 × 5 kilometers, she was ninth with Jana Hlavaty , Terry Porter and Twila Hinkle .

Because of her achievements, Rockwell has been voted cross-country skier of the year in the US twice. The US champion over the 5-kilometer route has since received an award named after her, the Martha Rockwell Award . After finishing her active career, she worked as a trainer in Dartmouth. In 1986 she was also inducted into the Hall of Fame for American Skiers.

Rockwell graduated from Bennington College . In 2000 she was married to her then partner, one of the first homosexual couples in Vermont under the Civil Union Act of the state.
