Martin Candrian

Martin Mathias Candrian (born July 11, 1945 in Vitznau ; legal resident in Sagogn ) is a Swiss manager and hotelier . In 1979 he took over the management of the Zurich train station buffet , founded Candrian Catering AG twenty years later and expanded it into one of the largest catering groups in Switzerland. Today he is Chairman of the Board of Directors of Candrian Catering.

Life

Origin and education

Martin Candrian was born in July 1945 in a park hotel in Vitznau as the son of Rudolf Candrian and Lili Candrian . Candrian comes from a traditional gastro family: his parents were restaurateurs and ran the hotel where Martin was born and later a restaurant in Zurich's main train station .

Candrian studied at the hotel management school in Lausanne and then learned the profession of hotelier in various hotels around the world.

At the age of 30, Martin Candrian joined his father's restaurant business in 1975 and four years later, in 1979, he was the third generation to manage the ten train station restaurants in Zurich main station . In 1981 Candrian was elected to the board of directors of the luxury hotel Suvretta House in St. Moritz , which his great-grandfather had founded. Since 1993 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Suvretta House.

Martin Candrian continued to expand his business. In the middle of 1999 he rearranged his empire, founded Candrian Catering AG and brought together the various individual companies that had previously belonged to him. The previous individual companies restaurants Bahnhofbuffet Zürich HB , Bahnhofbuffet Zürich Enge , Restaurant Rapido and Gasthof zum Hirschen am See in Meilen and the shares in the Suvretta-Haus company were brought into the company . From then on, Candrian was CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the newly founded company.

In May 2000 Martin Candrian founded the subsidiary Candrian Seafood AG as the Swiss franchisee of the German restaurant chain Nordsee and opened a branch in Zurich main station in October 2000 and a smaller branch in Winterthur in December 2000 . In November 2001, a second branch was added at Zurich main station. At the end of 2009, Candrian Seafood AG was merged with the parent company and dissolved.

In 2008, Martin Candrian began expanding to Basel by taking over a restaurant there. In 2010, the catering operations at Basel Central Station were added. In the following year, a traditional restaurant on Barfüsserplatz in Basel also became part of Candrian Catering AG. By 2012, the group already had seven restaurants in Basel.

On July 1, 2011, after 32 years as managing director, Martin Candrian gave up operational management of the company. Since then he has concentrated on the office of Chairman of the Board of Directors. Today the company is one of the largest catering groups in Switzerland. The group consists of 40 companies and employs 1000 people.

In addition to his commitment to his own ventures, Martin Candrian served on the Board of Directors of Credit Suisse , the Hotel Dolder Zurich and the Engadin St. Moritz Mountains . Since 2004 he has been a member of the Board of Directors of Flughafen Zürich AG .

family

Martin Candrian is married and has two daughters and two sons. He is also the grandfather of seven grandchildren .

He lives in Zollikon ZH .
