Life

Martin Drescher was born as the son of the farmer Franz Drescher from Raiding. He attended elementary school and subsequently worked as a farmer. After the outbreak of war in 1914 he fought on the Russian front and finally came home in 1917, where he took over his father's farm that same year. As early as 1918 Drescher was involved in peasant issues and became a well-known “peasant leader”, which in 1919 even earned him hostage for weeks during the Soviet Republic in Hungary . Drescher was district chairman of the farmers' union in 1924 and was subsequently elected to the state party board of the rural union. Drescher was also from 1926 to 1927 and 1928 deputy chairman in the federal state. Drescher was a member of the Burgenland Landtag between December 5, 1930 and October 31, 1934 and was a member of the Federal Council between April 29, 1925 and May 20, 1927, after replacing Alfred Walheim . According to the Grosswarasdorf gendarmerie post , Martin Drescher is said to have been a member of the NSDAP , although, according to historian Michael Wladika, it may have been an informer. In 1945 Drescher declared that there would no longer be a federal state in Burgenland and became a member of the ÖVP. From 1945 to 1946 he was mayor of Raiding and was a member of the National Council from December 19, 1945 to November 8, 1949. He was then again a member of the Federal Council from December 6, 1949 to June 22, 1956. Drescher was buried in the Raiding cemetery after his death.
