Martin Graf is the son of Marc Graf, member of the board of directors of Georg Fischer AG , and Margareth Graf (née Smith, of Australian origin). 1989 Graf joined the Greens Illnau-Effretikon. A year later, his political career began as a member of the community council of the city of Illnau-Effretikon. He also acted as president of the urban development commission and the cultural forum. In addition, Graf has been involved as a board member of the airport protection association since 2002, as a board member of the Winterthur Region Promotion Board from 2004 and as a committee member in the regional planning group Winterthur and the surrounding area from 2006.

On April 3, 2011, Martin Graf was elected to the Government Council of the Canton of Zurich . He displaced Hans Hollenstein , who achieved the absolute majority, but was eliminated as the surplus.

On April 12, 2015, Graf was voted out of office as a surplus member of the government council of the Canton of Zurich, according to him, in addition to the poor performance of the Greens, this was primarily due to the "Carlos" case .
