Martin Hofbauer (soccer player)

Martin Hofbauer (born June 22, 1992 ; † March 7, 2015 ) was an Austrian soccer player , "who was the first soccer player in the world with a lower leg prosthesis to take part in ' all competition games '".

In November 2011 at Hofbauer cancer diagnosed. After four chemotherapies , the right foot had to be amputated in May 2012 . Two months later he received his first prosthesis. During the rehabilitation he got in touch with the ski racer Matthias Lanzinger, whose lower leg was amputated. In September 2012, the agricultural machinery mechanic apprentice Hofbauer took his first steps with the prosthesis. In October he was back on the soccer field and scored a goal. In November 2012 he had to undergo lung surgery after metastasis had formed .

In May 2013, he was the first player with a prosthetic leg to be eligible to play in all championship matches from FIFA . Hofbauer played in his youth for Union Saifenboden (1999-2010) and since 2010 for the UFC Miesenbach from Miesenbach near Birkfeld , who competed in the 1st class East B (8th league).

In May 2014 Hofbauer received the Styrian Sports Award . He died of complications from his cancer on the night of March 7, 2015 at the age of 22.
