Martin Andrew Paterson (born May 10, 1987 in Tunstall , Stoke-on-Trent ) is an English - Northern Irish football player . The striker began his career with his hometown club, Stoke City . He also played for the Northern Irish national team between 2007 and 2014 .
Career
Stoke City
In the youth division of his home club Stoke City , Paterson played since he was nine. His first appearance for the Premier League representative completed Paterson in April 2005 in the 2-0 win over Plymouth Argyle . In the following years he switched between the first and second team of the Potters , so that he only signed his first professional contract in June 2006, after he made his starting eleven in March of the same year. To give Paterson more match practice he was awarded in November 2006 to the fourth division Grimsby Town . After the end of the three-month loan deal, it should be loaned again, with Wrexham FC being the interested party. However, the deal did not materialize.
In May 2007 the first contract negotiations took place, during which a new contract was proposed to Paterson.
Scunthorpe United
After his former employer Grimsby Town had expressed interest and the club's management was still interested in a contract extension, the second division promoted Scunthorpe United finally signed him . Paterson had turned down all offers of a new contract. In retrospect, Scunthorpe United was fined £ 305,000 and possible bonuses for failure to comply with the solicitation policy. In the end, Paterson is the most expensive transfer in the club's history. At Scunthorpe, he should help to replace the extremely successful Billy Sharp .
After scoring seven goals in his first 13 appearances, he was appointed to the Northern Irish national team for the first time . At the end of the season, when the club's relegation to the third division was certain, the club's management rejected both an offer from Burnley FC for £ 450.00 and a written transfer request from Paterson himself. Paterson should remain tied to the club as the top scorer.
Burnley FC
In June 2008, however, those responsible agreed on a transfer fee of £ 1 million, which could increase by £ 300,000 depending on performance. He signed a four-year contract with the Clarets .
In his first season he made 19 cross-competition goals that made his team advance to the Premier League via the playoffs against Sheffield United and the semi-finals in the League Cup .
In September of the following season , however, Paterson tore the medial meniscus and was out for four months. After his comeback against Bolton in January, he scored his first Premier League goal in February 2010 in a 2-5 draw against Aston Villa . Despite his return, the club rose again from the top division after just a year. Subsequently, Paterson extended his existing contract in June 2010 for a further three years. Subsequently, further injuries prevented him from continuous missions, such as thigh fatigue in November 2010. At the end of the 2012/2013 season he did not renew his contract and was without a club.
Huddersfield Town
On June 25, 2013, Paterson signed a two-year contract with Huddersfield Town . He made his debut for the club on August 3, 2013 and scored his first goal on November 23, 2013. In the second half of the season he was less used and was loaned to Bristol City on March 15, 2014 for the remainder of the 2013/2014 season.
The following season he injured himself while preparing. After recovering, he was loaned to Fleetwood Town , who play in Football League One , until January 3, 2015 . After another injury, he returned to Huddersfield on December 4, 2014. On January 25, 2015, he was loaned to Orlando City , who play in Major League Soccer .
National team
Born in England, he is eligible to play for the national team through his grandparents, who are of Northern Irish origin . After two sporadic missions in the U-21 he was nominated for the first time for the A-team in November 2007 in order to participate in the qualification for the European Championship 2008 . In the 1-0 away defeat against Spain , Paterson made his international debut as a substitute.
