Martin Emanuel Philippson (born June 27, 1846 in Magdeburg , † August 2, 1916 in Berlin ) was a German historian .

Life

Philippson was the son of the rabbi Ludwig Philippson and the brother of the geographer Alfred Philippson . After graduating from high school in his hometown, Philippson began to study history at the University of Bonn . He later switched to the same subject at the University of Berlin , where he completed his studies with a doctorate.

He then went back to Bonn as a private lecturer and was able to complete his habilitation there in 1871 at the age of 25. Four years later he was appointed associate professor. As a Jew, he was denied an appointment to a German professorship in Germany, so that in 1878 he accepted a position at the Free University of Brussels ( Université libre de Bruxelles ). There he taught as a full professor of history.

He contributed the two volumes Western Europe in the Age of Philip II, Elisabeth and Heinrich IV (1882) and The Age of Ludwig the Fourteenth (1879) to the renowned book series General History in Individual Representations published by the historian Wilhelm Oncken .

In 1890, Philippson was unanimously elected as rector of the Free University of Brussels by the general assembly of professors. Internal university and ideology-laden tensions caused him difficulties, especially with the student body, who rejected him as rector. For these democratic and liberal-progressive youth, Philippson was considered too conservative. After riots by the students, where individual anti-German sentences could be pronounced, he decided to give up his office voluntarily and also withdrew from his duties as a professor. 1891 Philippson settled in Berlin and worked from then on as a freelance academic writer.

In Berlin, Philippson helped found the Society for the Advancement of the Science of Judaism (1902). From 1896 to 1904 he was president of the German-Israelitic Association of Communities and promoted its recognition as a legal personality . He was a board member of the Association of Associations for Jewish History and Literature and was also elected to the board of the Association of German Jews in 1904 when it was founded .
