Marcin Odlanicki Poczo Butter
Marcin Odlanicki Poczobutt (born October 30, 1728 in Salomenka near Grodno , † February 7, 1810 in Dünaburg ) was a Polish-Lithuanian astronomer , Jesuit and mathematician .
He became professor and rector of mathematics at Vilnius University , where he organized the construction of the local observatory and bought the equipment. He also made observations of solar and lunar eclipses , comets and asteroids . In addition, he made measurements of the planet Mercury in order to be able to calculate its orbit . Poczobutt determined the geographic coordinates of places in Lithuania, including Vilnius. He was appointed Royal Astronomer and became a member of the Royal Society and a corresponding member of the Académie des Sciences .
The lunar crater Poczobutt was named after him.
