Martin Schenk (comedian)
Martin Schenk (born May 4, 1860 in Hernals , † October 21, 1919 in Vienna ) was an Austrian theater actor , comedian and theater director .
Life
Schenk was born in the then still independent municipality of Hernals near Vienna. After attending school and studying, he first appeared at the Deutsches Theater in Budapest, Hungary . In 1884 he moved to the spa town of Meran in Tyrol and later to Graz as an actor . Due to the influence of the popular singer Karl Drexler, however, he soon found great liking in the vaudeville theater, which was then increasingly emerging . In Budapest's Somossy-Orpheum he had his first appearances as a variety artist before he came to Vienna in 1899 in the capital of Austria-Hungary . In the local kk horticultural restaurant he got a job as head comedian and director. He usually appeared or held as a comedianSolo entertainer humorous lectures. During the First World War he lost his job in the horticultural restaurant and moved to the Mariahilfer Zentralpalast.
For a time he was also president of the artists' club “Die Lustigen Ritter”, which supported artists in need.
