Martin Simon (writer)
Martin Simon (born May 5, 1909 in Barmen ; † August 31, 1942 near Rschew / Soviet Union ) was a German writer .
Life
Martin Simon was the son of a businessman. From 1928 he studied German , philosophy and musicology in Cologne and Berlin . After his father's company went bankrupt in 1931, Simon had to drop out of his studies; Instead, he trained as a primary school teacher at the Pedagogical Academy in Dortmund . Since he, as chairman of the General Student Committee , had openly opposed the attacks by the National Socialists , the new rulers refused to give him the certificate, even though he had passed the teaching examination in February 1933. The completion of a compulsory labor period in the Sigmarshof in Bethel and a "probation semester " at the college for teacher training in Weilburg, Hesse, could not change that. Simon settled down as a freelance writer in the Westphalian town of Nettelstedt , to whose open-air theater he had been in contact since the early 1930s. In the following years he participated in open-air performances and also wrote plays for this theater.
After several unsuccessful attempts to obtain the certificate and thus a job as a teacher, Martin Simon joined the SA in 1937 and was hired as a teacher at an elementary school in Nettelstedt . In the same year he married his longtime partner Emmy Köppe; the marriage produced three daughters. At the beginning of the Second World War , Simon volunteered for the Wehrmacht . In 1940 he took part in the French campaign; he then completed training as a non-commissioned officer in Poland . From June 1941 he took part in the Russian campaign as a member of the 6th Army . He was awarded the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd class. Martin Simon was killed in the heavy fighting near Rzhev in August 1942 .
Martin Simon wrote stories and poems , some of which were published in renowned magazines such as B. The Inner Realm appeared. He wrote his plays partly in Standard German , partly in Westphalian dialect . In 1940 he received the Karl Wagenfeld Prize from the city of Soest for his play Die Westfälinger . Martin Simon's estate has been in the Lippische Landesbibliothek Detmold since 2002 .
