The Martineum is a high school in Halberstadt in Saxony-Anhalt .
history
The Martineum is one of the oldest schools in Germany. In 1545 the former parish school was converted into the first municipal school in Halberstadt. During the GDR era, the school was temporarily renamed " EOS Bertolt Brecht". The Martineum got its old name back on April 23, 1992 during the Martineum Days. On the same day, the former director Harald Schiller received a certificate identifying the building as a monument.
Redevelopment
The historic building was expanded; the foundation stone for the expansion was laid on November 27, 1992. The certificate read out on that day was deposited in the copper box when the foundation stone was laid along with a school chronicle, a daily newspaper and current coins. Part of the expansion is a new sports and multi-purpose hall as well as new classrooms. The topping-out ceremony took place less than a year later, on September 20, 1993. In the 1994 school year, the new premises were then used for teaching for the first time; the keys were handed over on August 18, 1994. The renovation work, which also included the old building, was finally completed on October 9, 1995. A total of DM 23 million was invested in the new and old buildings. Since then, the school has had a capacity of 900 pupils, who are taught in 39 modern classrooms and specialist cabinets. On March 22, 1995, the new Martineum building received an award in the area of " gap development " in the facade competition of the city of Halberstadt.
450th anniversary
In 1995, the year the renovation was completed, the school celebrated its 450th anniversary. The extensive festival program opened on April 29th. The celebrations began with an ecumenical service in the Martini Church, including a sermon by Joachim Rogge , a former student of the Martineum. The ceremony then took place in the Halberstadt theater. The program that day was supplemented by rides with a tram, and as a special highlight was the cathedral of the historical pendulum experiment by the French physicist Léon Foucault newly presented by students of Martineums, the Earth's rotation can prove.
