location

The church was built in the years 1912 to 1914 southeast of the old town on the former gallows hill of Köthen. Today it stands between Franzstraße in the north, Bahnhofsstraße in the east and Leipziger Straße, which forms the triangle.

History and architecture

The urban growth of Köthen also expanded to the south-east, where a Wilhelminian-style district was created. This received its own church building at the beginning of the 20th century. Friedrich Gothe , who had already proven his skills with the replacement of the village church in Gnetsch , was hired as the architect . For both places he designed a round building, creating a pure central tower church in Gnetsch, in which the components are arranged around the tower, whereas in Köthen he arranged the tower, servants' house and rectory east of the round domed structure. This creates a V-shaped floor plan. The hood of the choir tower is particularly striking and idiosyncratic.

In 1985 the Martinsgemeinde was merged with that of St. Jakob , so that the church has not been used for church services since then. In 1986 the city took over the building and tried out various uses. The servant house is used as a youth club, the cellar as a student club .

Interior and outfit

Due to multiple renovations and the abandonment of the church, nothing of the furnishings has survived. Only the spatial effect and parts of the glazing still bear witness to the former sacral use.

Appreciation

Holger Brülls describes the church in Dehio as a central building dominating the cityscape (...) with an impressive silhouette effect and speaks of an individual achievement of church building in the context of Art Nouveau and reform architecture . He also said in 2012: the Martinskirche (...) is the largest and most important sacred architectural monument of the early 20th century in Saxony-Anhalt. Here, too, he emphasizes the function as a landmark of the region.
